In the 1990s, when the gaming industry was vying for a license to construct an entertainment complex on the Mississippi River at the port in Lemay, a group of Lemay residents and businesspeople were instrumental in requiring the gaming developer to set aside funds for the improvement of housing in Lemay. The St. Louis County Port Authority received $225,000, which became the seed money to start the Lemay Housing Partnership. The casino, on the other hand, did not materialize.
The Partnership was incorporated on May 4, 1998, hired its first executive director in the fall of 1998, and received its 501 (c) (3) non-profit classification from the Internal Revenue Service. It was designated a certified Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Since then, the Partnership has put over a half million dollars back into the Lemay community through its housing programs.
In November 2001, the Partnership was recognized by the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council (now called the East-West Gateway Council of Governments).
LHP was one of three organizations from throughout the entire metropolitan area to receive the Community Initiative Award for Outstanding Achievement in Local Government.
Outgoing Ex-Director Justine's Highlights -
Working with the Port Authority Reinvestment Fund and other
funders to expand our services to Lemay's homeowners.
The amazing Wine Tasting at
River City Casino.
Working with the amazing staff and volunteers to DOUBLE the number of homes who received professional repairs and suppotive services.
Mark's Highlights -
Giving the Thanksgiving gift card (donated by a supporter) away to a homeowner. The homeowner just started a full time job in October after being underemployed for the past 2 years. She has been saving all of her earnings to pay her Real Estate taxes and wasn't planning to have Thanksgiving this year.
Helping families with emergency rent, mortgage, utilities through the emergency program. A homeowner who is one of my favorite individuals we were able to help through this program with emergency relocation assistance after his property went into foreclosure. We partnered with Saint Louis County to get his entire property cleaned out (it took weeks) so that he could get some money back, and finally the Wash U volunteer students helped him load items at one property and unload them at his new home. With all of this support, he was able to move into a more affordable home and get some money from the mortgage company to cover some of his expenses.
Nina's Facebook Highlight.
LHP serves as the fiscal agent for the Metro Saint Louis Home Repair Network. If we can't help you, we probably know someone who can.
LHP is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board has at all times at least one third of its membership comprised by low-income or Lemay residents. The Board receives assistance from its Community Advisory Committee, a ten person volunteer group made up of former Board members and/or current Lemay residents.
